The under-contract Leeds United player was named as a trialist by Sheffield United.
The Leeds United midfielder Callum Nicell was an unused substitute as Sheffield United’s Under-23s lost to Watford on Monday.
But what do those of a Sheffield United persuasion need to know about the player, who is far from a household name?

Who is he?
A 19-year-old central midfielder who hails from Doncaster, situated between the two cities of Leeds and Sheffield. It was through the Whites academy ranks that Nicell progressed to earn a professional contract.
What’s his situation?
His existing deal was signed last summer and runs until the end of this season, but he was identified as ‘Trialist’ on Sheffield United’s official site, nonetheless. Leeds have not (yet) confirmed his departure.

What has he achieved?
A Republic of Ireland youth international, Nicell was part of the Leeds U23 side which was crowned champions of the Professional Development League 2 last season. He was twice named on Whites’ first-team bench during Paul Heckingbottom’s reign, but is awaiting his professional debut nearly 18 months on.

Nicell appeared for a Leicester City XI against Hednesford Town in pre-season, although his presence was never officially explained. He could still sign for another Premier League or Championship club and play youth-team football, despite the window having closed earlier this month.

According to Transfermarkt, Nicell is registered to the Base Soccer agency, which represents his fellow Doncaster native – and Leeds academy product – Danny Rose, as well as the Sheffield United-schooled pair, Kyle Walker and Kyle Naughton.
